SAIN explores the region and invites you along via the immersive imaging technology of SAIN partner Ipix™. The collection now includes a general introduction to an Appalachian ecosystem and tours of the Little Tennessee River and the Tennessee River Gorge. SAIN will continue developing and enhancing current and new visualization tools this year, if you are interested in knowing more or collaborating with us in this project contact Franciel Azpurua-Linares.

SAIN wins Special Applications in GIS Award from ESRI during the last ESRI Users Conference

SAIN new home of the DLIA ATBI system!

We welcome our new partners Discover Life in America (DLIA) and the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park . The Southern Appalachian Information Node is providing support to this group in areas such as database and systems infrastructure support as well as web support, among other things. If you want to know more about our collaboration, please contact Shelaine Curd-Hetrick. If you want to know more about the ATBI project contact Jeanie Hilten.

Hemlock Wooly AdelgidSAIN is providing web support to the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Action Team. This is a diverse group that have gotten together to pool their expertise and resources to combat the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid in the Southern Appalachians. If you want to learn more about this group, go to www.saveourhemlocks.org If you are interested in knowing more about this project contact the Southern Appalachian Man and the Biosphere Program (SAMAB).

Did you know that the state of Alabama...

- Has more species of mussels, snails and crayfish than any other state?
- Ranks second in the nation in number of fish species?
- Alabama waters contain: 61% of the nation's mussels, 7 found only in Alabama, 38% of the nation's fish, 11 found only in Alabama; 49% of the nation's turtles, 1 found only in Alabama; and 43% of the nation's aquatic snails, 106 found only in Alabama?
- Has more than 4,000 vascular plant species, 4th most diverse in the nation, and that 20 plant species are found ONLY in Alabama?
